Beginning in the early eighties in Spanish Town Jamaica, this music developed from a response to the dominance of roots reggae. At first, it was characterized by deejays toasting on top of reggae riddims, rapidly progressing into a distinct blend of electronic sounds, driving beats, and frequently provocative lyrics.
